Type 2 Diabetes - The Myth of A Diabetic Diet

Naeem | 11:06 AM |

Along with some grief and distress following a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes, there is in fact some good resulting from this diagnosis. Often there is a sudden realization things need to change once and for all. You could call it an epiphany moment, where individuals finally realize they have to improve their lifestyle for the better, if they're to at least maintain any semblance of good health. Habits must be reworked and adjusted, and positive additions must be introduced. To make such changes is rather simple. It's rather the maintenance of these adjustments and applied consistency that proves more difficult.

One of the revelations experienced by the newly diagnosed diabetic is in regards to diet and nutrition. Usually this entails a sudden radical change in the individual's food intake, presumably to lower their blood sugar levels as well as their weight so as to prevent the condition from worsening. While this intention is in good spirit, it's ultimately not the best decision especially when you consider these changes are rarely sustainable. Just like the rule stating all things are good in moderation, very seldom are things beneficial in the extremes, especially when lifestyle is involved.

It's evident the solution is to introduce positive change. But, we must be realistic and make intelligent decisions. Impetuous decisions are almost always momentary resolutions lacking the essential longevity to ensure your health improves over the long-term.

On that note, we must clear one major misconception... there is no such thing as a diabetic diet. It is a myth. A diet abstaining from carbohydrates, one focusing on a strict selection of foods, one featuring a magic pill in the form of a supplement or something extraneous - all have one thing in common - they are all illusions. Such diets that claim to be the answer to controlling your blood sugar levels and in turn your Type 2 diabetes, will lead you down a course of false propositions, wasting your valuable time.

The truth is, as a Type 2 diabetic you have to optimize your diet. You most certainly have to instigate changes. But these changes have to be made within reason.

One thing is almost a certainty - you likely have some weight to lose. By making simple moderations to your lifestyle you can start to lose weight. Simply eat a little bit less than you're used to every day, and start exercising if you haven't already. From there, you can make additional adjustments where you deem necessary. With time, you can start to improve...

    your carbohydrate choices,
increase your daily intake of fruits and vegetables,
select healthier sources of fats, and

so on and so forth.

Don't believe the myth of a diabetic diet for any longer. Treatment and management of your blood sugar is not rocket science. Though remarkably, we are often guilty of overlooking the basics.

Although managing your disease can be very challenging, Type 2 diabetes is not a condition you must just live with. You can make simple changes to your daily routine and lower both your weight and your blood sugar levels. Hang in there, the longer you do it, the easier it gets.
