Type 2 Diabetes - Losing The First Five Pounds

Naeem | 1:27 AM |

The Type 2 diabetic trying to lose weight will have to start with the basics...

a healthy eating plan will have to be looked at as a lifestyle change as opposed to merely a temporary solution.
definitive nutritional adjustments will have to be made to accommodate the body's requirements for improved health.
additionally, exercise will have to be introduced instead of being sedentary and physically inactive.

Once the basics are set, weight loss is just a matter of consistency and time. Patience is truly a virtue. Significant weight loss is not meant to be immediate or rushed. When patient, success can be ensured by avoiding burnout and a relapse to previously followed unhealthy behaviors that contributed to weight gain, especially around the abdominal area. Excess fat carried around the abdomen is especially linked to insulin resistance and the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

The first five pounds are a noticeable mark of your progress and is often the first indication you are on the right track... although it may not be aesthetically significant to you. For those who are overweight, your mind will play games on you if you attempt to find proof of your 5-pound weight loss by looking in the mirror. Though, rest assured, the weight scale never lies. If you weigh yourself one morning two weeks after your previous weigh-in and see a decrease in your body weight beyond a couple pounds, know for certain you are on your way. Be confident, avoid complacency, and be meticulous about your habits to ensure your success.

With that said, one important point must be made...

Fat loss itself is not entirely conclusive, nor consistent. Just because your weight has decreased it does not mean it has been entirely a loss of fat. This is especially true in regards to the first 5 pounds. What often happens is a noticeable difference in your body's retention of water. Usually, when first altering your diet for weight loss, you significantly reduce the amount of carbohydrates you are consuming. Carbohydrates have a tendency to hold onto water... therefore, when taking in fewer carbohydrates your body will be subjected to lower levels of water retention. This means some of your weight loss during those initial 5 pounds will be attributed to water weight loss.

Don't worry - this is completely normal. As long as you stay hydrated and your habits remain on track, you will be more than fine. Once your body gets used to your newly enhanced diabetic diet, and your body adopts a weight loss state, progress will happen naturally.

The first 5 pounds is a stepping-stone. Be persistent, and a lean and healthy body, with minimal disturbances from illness will be yours.

Although managing your disease can be very challenging, Type 2 diabetes is not a condition you must just live with. You can make simple changes to your daily routine and lower both your weight and your blood sugar levels. Hang in there, the longer you do it, the easier it gets.
