Type 2 Diabetes - Prevent Full-Blown Diabetes By Maintaining a Healthy Weight After Pregnancy

Naeem | 10:57 AM |

About 5 percent of pregnancies are complicated by Gestational, or pregnancy related diabetes. Fifty percent of women who get the condition will develop Type 2 diabetes within 5 to 10 years after delivery.

Researchers at Dalama University in Falun, Sweden, compared diet, exercise, and physical activity in women with and without a history of Gestational diabetes and compared the prevalence of diabetes after pregnancy in the two groups.

Their study, reported on in the journal BMC Pregnancy Childbirth in March 2015, included 111 women diagnosed with a history of developing diabetes when pregnant, and 333 women who each had a normal pregnancy.

All women were given instructions on diet and physical activity. Four years later women with a previous history of Gestational diabetes performed physical activity with less intensity than those with a history of a normal pregnancy. A total of 19 women, all with a previous history of Gestational diabetes, developed full-blown Type 2 diabetes...

    poor eating habits,
    not performing regular exercise, and
    being overweight or obese,

were all associated with low self-reported health.

Another study, reported on in the journal Diabetologia in March 2015, also looked at the progression to Type 2 diabetes in women with a history of Gestational diabetes. Investigators at National Institute of Health compared body mass index (BMI) and weight change in women with a history of Gestational diabetes and their risk of developing diabetes after delivery.

The study included 1,695 women who had developed diabetes during their pregnancy. A total of 259 new cases of Type 2 diabetes were diagnosed within 18 years after delivery. It was found women with an increasing BMI were associated with a higher risk of developing diabetes. For each kg of weight gain after pregnancy there was a 27 percent increase in the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Women with a BMI under 30 and who gained less than 5 kg had a substantially lower risk of diabetes than those who had a BMI of at least 30 and who gained 5 kg or more.

From the above studies it strongly appears physical activity and maintaining a healthy weight are important for preventing Type 2 diabetes after having had Gestational diabetes. The physical activity you like is the one you are most likely to stick with, so look around for something fun...

take your dog walking every day and enjoy the scenery.
find a bike trail and enjoy the fresh air while riding.
take folk dancing lessons and learn a little about different cultures while moving around.
keep a food diary and stay with a sensible plan for eating fresh vegetables and fruits.

Although managing your disease can be very challenging, Type 2 diabetes is not a condition you must just live with. You can make simple changes to your daily routine and lower both your weight and your blood sugar levels. Hang in there, the longer you do it, the easier it gets.
