Pregnancy and Diabetes: Be Prepared, Be Cautious

Most women get more sensitive, anxious, and fearful when they go through pregnancy. Carrying a life within is not that easy and it gets more complicated when the expecting mom has to go through diabetes. Diabetic pregnancy has now become one of the major complications for the mother and the unborn. You may never have diabetes but still during pregnancy u can develop it and the medical term used for this condition is known as gestational diabetes. The basic reason is same for gestational diabetes like others; here also the level of blood sugar rises.

How to know whether you have developed diabetes in pregnancy?

It is quite difficult to know whether the expecting mom is developing diabetes because the common symptoms of diabetes match with the symptoms of pregnancy progression like, increased hunger, frequent urination and excessive thirst.

So, diabetes can remain hidden within yourself if you don't go for a test. Testing will tell you the stage of diabetes. And please don't ignore this life saving test as high level of sugar in your blood could create a severe damage not only to you but also to your child.

What happens to you and to the baby?

If the blood sugar gets quite high, inevitability it will enter into the placenta. Placenta is the organ which actually connects your baby with the uterine wall; so that the baby could take nutrients, exchange gases and other things with your blood.

If the excess sugar enters into the baby's circulation, the baby's pancreas would increase insulin secretion to keep the sugar level normal in its blood. This excess sugar and excess insulin ultimately will make the baby bigger, this condition has a medical term to describe, and medically we call this baby- macrosomic.

I think, now you can imagine the complications. Macrosomic babies often can't go through vaginal delivery and trying them to go for normal delivery could cause vaginal injury and baby's bones could get fractured and the nerves could get damaged.

Moreover, diabetic pregnancy often causes your body to get ready for delivery before the due date, around three weeks before. And the birth of pre mature baby often raise many future complications like psychological, vision, hearing problems as well as behavioral and dental problems. The curse has not ended yet!! Most women, who go through gestational diabetes, have twice the possibility of developing type 2 diabetes.

How to handle diabetes in pregnancy?

To handle the situation you need to go to your doctor. Your doctor will change your diet and no matter what, stick to the changed chart as it is really important for both of your life. Here is a book to help your diet chart - 'Eating for Pregnancy: The Essential Nutrition Guide and Cookbook for Today's Mothers-to-Be' by Catherine Jones and Rose Ann Hudson. It could be found in amazon. The book illustrated not only about the foods but also how to cook healthy and easy foods at home and as a plus point it added chapters about exercises during pregnancy.

Now, what happens if the diet chart plan fails and still the level of blood sugar is rising? Don't get panicked. In that case the doctor will suggest oral medications first and if that fails too, you may need to go for insulin shots to keep the glucose level normal but as I have already mentioned, the baby exchanges things with your blood. Obviously when these medications will reach your blood, it can go into your baby's blood too and this won't be good for the baby.

So, prevention is better than cure, keep an eye on the glucose level and maintain your diet chart and keep checking the glucose level during the whole pregnancy period, so that you know what to eat and what not to. And never forget, balanced food, good mood and healthy exercises could ensure a good life to you and also to your baby.
